Palm Mews House,

Ballsbridge

Inspired by the clients’ love of mid-century design, Palm Mews House takes its cue from their prized Slim Aarons Poolside Gossip print. In the background of that photograph, Richard Neutra’s Kaufmann House sits quietly against the purple mountains of Palm Springs — a composition that shaped the tone and material palette for this mews home in Ballsbridge.

To maximise light from the south-facing courtyard, pale grey metal fins sit in front of 3-metre-high glazing on both ground and first floors. The gently twisting fins give privacy to the master ensuite and act as solar shading alongside the first-floor overhang. A bespoke hinge system was developed and modelled at 1:1 so the fins could open in unison with the escape window — a tailored solution that keeps the facade clean and refined.

This three-storey new-build, including a basement level, feels unexpectedly spacious and bright. The front elevation cantilevers at first floor to achieve generous internal accommodation while preserving space for private parking — a key requirement on a tight mews site.

Inside, the home is warm and textural, with exposed lime-mortared brickwork and oak used throughout. Mid-century cues appear in the details, layered with a soft, natural materiality to create a calm and contemporary family space. The plan includes three bedrooms and a generous open-plan kitchen–living–dining area opening to the courtyard.

Palm Mews House pairs the charm of a mews typology with the clarity and quiet confidence of mid-century modernism — shaped around light, privacy and considered material richness.
